Laura Prepon
The youngest of five siblings, Laura Prepon was born March 7, 1980, in Watchung, New Jersey. She had a normal childhood and attended the local regional high school. At the age of 15, she caught the acting bug.
Laura decided to quit regular secondary school and enrolled herself in a specialized theater college. Aside from working in plays like A Woman of Property and Ascension Day, Prepon took up ballet and modern and jazz dance. As she continued to improve her theater skills, she began taking the 45-minute drive to New York and attended every audition possible.
Having little more than an MCI commercial and the Internet series, They Go On on her resume, on a whim, Prepon went to the That 70s Show audition. Right away, the producers knew they had their Donna. Laura was Donna, the epitome of the girl next door -- a perfect fit. She got the part - a major role on a Fox sitcom at the age of 18.
Although the show was slow to draw big audience numbers, Prepon enjoyed success none-the-less. She modeled in Paris and Milan, and did a new commercial for the skincare line Clean & Clear. When the third season of That 70s Show came in 2000, it had finally established a strong following. Prepon was able to obtain small parts in lesser-known movies such as The Best and Brightest and The Pornographer: A Love Story.
With a low-key take on her business, Prepon wants to take her rise to fame on the proper path. There will be no appearances, she sez, in movies like Scream or Cant Hardly Wait, although she did appear in the 2002 comedy Slackers and the smaller-scale film Southlander. She admits to having taken on minor roles, not because they were the only ones available, but because she knew they would help her later on.
Although Prepon is spoken for (she is living with boyfriend Christopher Masterson of Malcolm in the Middle), it doesnt stop guys from dreaming of meeting someone like her: an ideal woman in many men's opinions.
It's tough today to make folks laugh, but Prepon and her co-stars are among the few that succeed at doing so. Today, many shows come and go, trying new takes and gimmicks to attract audiences. When That 70s Show first aired, it looked like it would last three episodes, tops. That negative thinking stopped when fans realized the show starred an original cast with an original plot. At the center of it all was Laura as Donna; the cute girl next door who was always a good friend until one day...
Her portrayal as the ideal woman got the best of her fictional buddy, and fans, too, for that matter. She plays hoops and can beat guys in arm-wrestling, yet is still the prettiest chick on the block. She might be the perfect girlfriend, who is just as, if not more, willing to watch an NFL doubleheader on Sunday. Amazing stuff.
There is much more to Laura Prepon than her character on the show. She is an unassuming actress who comes across as a plain Jane who got lucky in a tough business. Modest, Prepon is now in the midst of establishing herself in Hollywood while still remaining connected to her Fox show.
Acting like one of the guys, even off the air, Prepon is not your typical young TV star. She's low-key and quiet, leaving the high-profile behavior to fellow series actor Ashton Kutcher. Unlike most young actress types today, she doesnt seem to have a shady past or any secrets for the tabloids to hype. Shes just Laura, plain and simple. Very approachable, sweet and funny, she's the kind of girl some folks might want their son or little brother to bring home for dinner.
When people meet me, she confesses, they think I'm going to be outgoing, but I like things low-key. I don't like people to think I'm bragging.
Not to worry, gal. Like they say in Hollywood, Actions speak louder than words.
