The new chick singer on the block known simply as Tweet is definitely controversial, but the fact that she is beautiful and talented didn’t hurt her a bit.
Despite her critics among the conservative in-crowd, Tweet gained an instant buzz in the music business after Missy Elliott took her on as her protégé and agreed to help work on her album. When Tweet's debut single “Oops (Oh My),” was released in early 2002, it lived up to the hype and has remained a steady fixture on the pop, R&B and video charts ever since.
In the current glut of new divas, such as Ashanti, Charli Baltimore, et al, Tweet stands out as a more mysterious and exotic alternative to her formulaic counterparts. In music, she was granted this status thanks to the unconventional beats, rhythms and melodies that her producer set up for her. In appearance, her smoldering dark eyes give the singer a mysterious quality that is lacking in most female musicians today.
Tweet’s differences certainly add to her desirability, but that is not to say that she isn't blessed with her share of the standard gifts, the most obvious being her face with its rounded features and infectious smile. Although it's a near tragedy that her face is hidden behind her hat in the “Oops...” video, the “visual documentation” of her gorgeous legs more than makes up for it.
Tweet appears ready to emerge as one of the more innovative female artists in music. A down to earth, brutally honest woman, she doesn't shy away from trashing her former label and band mates, or confessing to her smoking habits. At the same time, she's fully aware about how fleeting stardom is and seems intent on enjoying every minute she can spend in the limelight.
Though it would stand to logic that Charlene Keys’ infamous moniker “Tweet” would come as some reference to her early resemblances to a songbird, it actually has no base in singing or anything for that matter.
“I’ve been Tweet since I was a little girl,” she said. “It's a nickname. Everybody in my family now wants to claim that they named me that. No one knows why. It’s been Tweet forever though.”
Training from an early age to be a gospel singer has helped Tweet develop her vocal range. Tweet was given proper voice instruction and learned to sing in a variety of styles. This ability, has helped her to distinguish herself slightly from her peers.
A hit single and a Top Ten album are not small accomplishments. Most musicians spend their entire lives trying to accomplish at least one of those lofty goals. Still, T weet has yet to really make her mark on music.
She is cast in the shadow of Missy Elliott, but with sales of her single and album hovering around the platinum range, she is taking steps in the right direction to become a true star.
