Q. When you were younger, did you fool around a lot or goof off in high school?
A. Afraid not, but let me explain. I wasn’t what you’d call “a do-gooder.” I went to a French private school and everything was much more controlled and structured than the school activities you have today. Everybody at my school wore uniforms, so we didn’t experience as many overt sexual “turn-ons” or flirtations as you see in classrooms today.
Q. In your younger days, before you had won the Oscar and become a big star, what was your idea of having a good time.
A. Going to movies. Or staying at home in my room for six days reading, and having time by myself. That has always had a great deal of appeal to me because I’m always around so many people in my business. It’s difficult to have any free time. I need my space.
Q. What kind of movies do you like?
A.I like all kinds of movies. Especially, French films. I see every movie I can. I’m kinda what you’d call a real movie buff.
Q. What kind of an effect does the movie rating system have today on young actors and
actresses?
A. It’s tough. It’s sort of a technical thing. You just can’t say four letter words more than once in a film today and expect to get a PG rating.
Q. How did your mother feel about some of the rather “adult-type” roles you played as a teenager? Did she object or approve of the subject matter?
A. We’ve never had any problems like that. My mom and I are a team. I never knew that much about scripts, really. I mean, they came in and I read them, and I knew instantly if I liked them or not. But, when it came down to the final decision in my younger years, it was her choice, not mine.
Q. What criteria do you use when choosing a role to portray in a film?
A. Strength. I don’t play weak people, just because filmgoers might wanna see weak people on the big screen.
Q. When was the first time you portrayed a character on screen you were not totally comfortable playing?
A. I’d say in the film “Carnie.” I played a waitress who became a stripper. I got to wear a strip tease outfit, that was kinda fun, but the role itself was different for me. And a challenge to handle, I might add.
