Twenty-five things you may not have known about Elvis Presley:
(1) Elvis’ idol was General Douglas MacArthur.
(2) Elvis is reported to have memorized every line of dialogue from the
George C. Scott film, “Patton.”
(3) In his youth, Elvis tried out for his high school glee club, and didn’t make it. The reason: He couldn’t sing well enough.
(4) In his lifetime, Elvis bought more than 100 Cadillacs, and gave more than 80 of them away. His first Caddy was a pink one that he gave to his mother.
(5) Elvis put lifts in the shoes he wore during his performances, and also put them in his bedroom slippers.
(6) As Elvis became more famous, he became to believe that he was no ordinary human being. For one thing, he believed that he could move clouds.
(7) Elvis often got the urge to fire pistols. On one memorable night, while relaxing in the Imperial Suite on the 30th floor of the Las Vegas Hilton after his show, Elvis aimed at a lamp on a table. He missed. The pistol shot went through the wall of the suite’s bathroom, while Elvis’ then-girlfriend, Linda Thompson, was sitting on the camode. A tiny rip appeared in the toilet paper in her hand and the mirror on the door splintered into shards of glass. (If Linda has been standing near the toilet paper holder, the bullet would have gone through her leg). On another occasion, Elvis was watching television and became irritated by Robert Goulet singing. He fired a pistol at Goulet’s image on the TV set and shattered the picture tube.
(8) Elvis had hundreds of guns and he liked to keep them loaded at all times. But, he always left the first chamber empty.
(9) One of Elvis’ favorite late-night haunts was the Memphis funeral home where his mother’s body had originally been laid out. (He frequently took dates down to the funeral home in the wee hours of the morning to view the dead bodies).
(10) Elvis’ favorite amusement car ride was the bumper cars.
(11) Seven percent of Americans think that Elvis is still alive.
(12) Elvis thought that J. Edgar Hoover was “the greatest living American.” Richard Nixon wasn’t far behind.
(13) The medical examiner’s report stated that Elvis’ body was found in the bathroom in a rigor-mortised state. The homicide report said that Elvis was found unconscious in his bedroom.
(14) The medical examiner’s report listed Elvis’ weight at the time of death at 170 pounds. He actually weighed 250 pounds.
(15) On Elvis’ last concert tour, he was overheard saying, “I may not look good tonight, but I’ll look good in my coffin.”
(16) As a young man, Elvis’ manager, Col. Tom Parker, once faked his death. An illegal immigrant from Holland, whose real name was Andreas Van Kujik, Parker left Holland without telling his relatives; they thought he was dead.
(17) Col. Tom Parker wore a loud Hawaiian shirt and a baseball cap to Elvis’ funeral. He never once approached the casket to bid farewell to Elvis.

Forrest Bobo was the store clerk in Tupelo Hardware who sold Elvis Presley his first guitar. Elvis’ mother, Gladys, paid $7.75 for the instrument for her 11-year-old son in February, 1946.
Elvis Presley’s first guitar, expected to fetch $7-million at a fancy New York auction, was tuned out by bidders at Guersey’s in Manhattan and returned to a dusty shelf at Sun Records in Memphis, where Elvis first recorded. (Even though the auction catalog listed the battered tape-wrapped gem as “the most important musical instrument of our time,” not one bidder was interested in making the $350,000 minimum bid).
