The Alexander Harvey Interview – During an intermission in his nightclub act, Alexander Harvey, the composer of the hit song “Delta Dawn,” recalls how long it took him to compose the tune, the singers who helped make it a hit (Bette Midler, Tanya Tucker and Helen Reddy) and the two stars who didn’t like the song (“Barbra Streisand said to junk it”). He marvels at how many hit records (18-million) were sold (“We never thought it’d be a hit, the song violates every commercial rule”) and suggests that all young composers should use good judgment when writing the lyrics to their songs (“Phonetics are more important than meanings”).
